Assistance for Military and Veteran Families

Thanks to the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA), if you're active duty military you may have access to special benefits to help make your financial situation easier.

Benefits

What benefits are
provided by the SCRA?

SCRA Benefits

Reduction or Limits on Interest Rates

In an effort to help you stay on top of your monthly payments, the SCRA offers active duty service members the opportunity to reduce the rate of interest on pre-existing loans. The federal law sets a maximum interest rate of 6%, including service charges, renewal charges, and fees. If your interest rate is higher than 6%, your payments can be reduced to reflect the lower interest rate. The 6% rate would be in effect for your entire active duty service plus 12 months.

Eligibility

You may be eligible
for SCRA benefits if you are...

A regular member of the U.S. Armed Forces (Army, Army Reserve, Navy, Navy Reserve, Marine Corps, Marine Corps Reserve, Air Force, Air Force Reserve, Coast Guard, Coast Guard Reserve).

An active service member of the Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Active duty service members and reservists.

A dependent or spouse of service members in active duty. Under the SCRA, spouses of active duty service members are eligible for benefits if they are jointly responsible with the service member for the account obligations.

Loans that were obtained during active duty in military service are not eligible for the 6% interest rate cap or the foreclosure protection. Also, National Guard members who are not under federal orders are generally not eligible for SCRA protections, unless there is a state law that provides similar benefits to National Guard personnel who are on state orders.

SCRA benefits can be denied for one of four reasons:

1. Your military service started prior to incurring debt.
a. Your active duty has to start after you signed your mortgage note to qualify for SCRA protection.

2. Your service status is no longer active and it has been 12 months since your military service ended.
a. SCRA benefits extend only through active duty as well as 12 months after your active duty has ended.

3. Benefits not applicable to branch of service.
a. In some cases, your branch or status of service may not be covered under the SCRA.

4. For the interest rate protection, we did not receive record of your military service orders.
a. For the interest rate protection, if you are on active duty or within 180 days of your active duty ending, you can still qualify for protection.  Please send us a copy of your military orders.

If you are denied benefits, you will receive a letter confirming exactly why you were denied. If you believe this is incorrect and would like to dispute the denial, please send a copy of your military service orders to:
